A new international coalition campaigning for the release of former Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum has emerged, signaling renewed pressure on the country’s ruling authorities. The group, launched on Thursday, is calling for an immediate end to what it describes as the unlawful detention of Bazoum and his wife.
The coalition, known as “Friends of the Former Nigerien President,” brings together political figures, legal specialists, academics, and human rights defenders from across different countries. Members argue that the conditions under which Bazoum is being held violate international human rights standards.
Among the members is international relations expert Dr. Serigne Bamba Gaye, who says the coalition aims to amplify global advocacy efforts and draw attention to Bazoum’s prolonged detention. The group insists that his continued confinement undermines democratic principles and regional stability.
The coalition is expected to intensify its engagements in the coming weeks, including diplomatic outreach and public campaigns. It hopes increased pressure from both local and international stakeholders will help secure the release of the former president and restore constitutional order in Niger.
