In Niger, civil society organisations have criticized the European Parliament for calling for the release of deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
The reaction follows a resolution adopted last week by European lawmakers demanding the release of the former leader, who has been detained since the July 2023 coup.
However, Nigerien civil society groups describe the move as interference in the country’s internal affairs.
They argue that the resolution undermines Niger’s sovereignty and the authority of its current leadership.
