Human rights concerns are deepening in Niger as citizens and civil society groups warn of a steady deterioration in fundamental freedoms across the country. The alarm was raised during the commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, marked on Wednesday.
The event brought together authorities, civil society representatives, and citizens under the theme “Social Cohesion: A Factor in the Realization of Human Rights.” Speakers noted that growing restrictions, insecurity, and limited civic space are undermining the protection of basic rights and freedoms.
The Nigerien Network of Human Rights Defenders used the occasion to call on the transitional authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard human rights nationwide. They emphasized the need for stronger institutional reforms, improved accountability, and better protection for vulnerable groups.
For many citizens, the anniversary served as a reminder that peace and social cohesion cannot be sustained without genuine respect for human rights. Civil society actors insist that meaningful progress will require political will and continued public engagement.
