In Niger, a new civil society coalition has been launched to push for a return to democratic rule under military leadership.

The group, called the Framework for Combating Abuses in Niger (CDN), brings together lawyers, journalists, researchers, and civic leaders. In its first statement, the CDN demanded free and transparent elections, reinstatement of banned political parties and unions, and the release of deposed President Mohamed Bazoum alongside other political prisoners.

The formation of the group comes amid heightened insecurity, with 27 Nigerien soldiers killed in recent attacks in the Tillabéri region claimed by the Islamic State.

Observers say the CDN could become a key voice for democratic resistance in Niger.
