As Nigeria marked Democracy Day, citizens across the country responded with mixed emotions to President Bola Tinubu’s national address. While some praised his call for unity and democratic progress, others questioned whether his administration has upheld those values.

From parades to symposiums, the day was packed with events celebrating the country’s return to civilian rule. Schools and universities also joined in, hosting debates and essay contests to enlighten young Nigerians on the significance of June 12.

Still, many Nigerians remain divided. Some see the day as a time to reflect on democratic gains, while others believe it exposes the shortcomings of the current political system.

For many, the occasion rekindled memories of democracy icons like MKO Abiola, offering a reminder of the sacrifices made—and the ideals yet to be fully realised.
