A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico, early Monday, the US Geological Survey reported. The tremor hit at 02:21 UTC, just two days after another strong quake rattled the region.
On Saturday, a 5.9 magnitude quake off Guatemala’s southwest coast and a 5.7 quake off Chiapas, Mexico, were felt across southern Mexico and Guatemala City. No fatalities or major infrastructure damage have been reported from any of the recent quakes.
Experts note the region’s location along the North American, Cocos, and Caribbean tectonic plates makes it prone to frequent seismic activity.
