Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on Wednesday for establishing sexual harassment as a criminal offence nationwide.
Sheinbaum’s call followed an incident where a man groped her and attempted to kiss her while she was walking down the street.
The event took place on Tuesday as Claudia Sheinbaum was heading to an event near the presidential palace, greeting and taking photos with people along the route.
The man approached her from behind, put his arm around her shoulder, and tried to kiss her neck.
A member of her security detail intervened and removed the man, who seemed intoxicated.
Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, stated on Wednesday that she decided to report the incident to police after learning the man was harassing other women.
