Mauritania is pinned to receive 210 million euros in financial support from the European Union.
This fund was announced during a meeting between the Mauritanian President Mohammed Ould Ghazouani, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez.
Von der Leyen speaking at a joint press conference on Thursday in Nouakchott said Mauritania welcomes refugees fleeing violence in the region and therefore needs all the help it can get.
She affirmed that the situation in the Sahel was precarious and Mauritania played a vital role for stability in the region.
The European Commission concluded with an elaborate plan that entails increased cooperation between the Union and Mauritania in the fight against illegal migration.
