Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, has officially inaugurated AES Square in Bamako, marking a significant shift in the country’s symbolic landscape. Previously known as Place du Sommet Afrique-France, the square now represents the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
In a parallel move, ECOWAS Avenue has been renamed AES Avenue. The renaming extends to 20 other public spaces in Bamako, now honoring national and African historical figures. These changes include major boulevards, streets, and schools, reflecting the military-led government’s pursuit of sovereignty and regional identity in the Central Sahel.
Similar initiatives are reported in Niger and Burkina Faso, underscoring a shared vision among the AES member states.
