Tensions between Mali and Algeria have escalated as Prime Minister Abdulaye Maiga used his UN General Assembly address to accuse Algiers of supporting terrorism and undermining Mali’s sovereignty.
The dispute follows a drone incident that Mali says occurred inside its borders, claiming Algerian forces crossed over to shoot it down. Algeria insists the drone was flying over its territory and presented radar data as evidence.
Mali had filed a case at the International Court of Justice on September 16, accusing Algeria of aggression. But three days later, the ICJ declined to proceed after Algeria refused to recognize the Court’s jurisdiction.
Algiers has dismissed Mali’s accusations as a political maneuver, while Bamako maintains that Algeria’s actions and alleged support for armed groups are destabilizing the region.
