Mali’s justice system has ordered the release of three tonnes of gold seized last January from Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold, bringing a major mining dispute to an end.
Valued at about 400 million dollars, the gold had been held in Bamako for nearly a year amid disagreements over the implementation of Mali’s new mining code and related financial obligations.
The ruling, announced on Tuesday, follows a comprehensive agreement reached in late November between the Malian government and Barrick Gold to normalize relations after months of tension.
Sources say the deal includes the settlement of outstanding payments to the Malian Treasury, the dropping of legal proceedings against company executives, and the withdrawal of international arbitration cases.
