In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, Mali’s Special Assize Court sentenced former Economy Minister Bouaré Fily Sissoko to 10 years in prison for her role in the controversial purchase of a presidential jet and military equipment.
Sissoko was found guilty of embezzling public funds, falsifying documents, and misusing state resources. The case, dating back several years, involved over 130 billion CFA francs (approximately 220 million USD), sparking widespread outrage over corruption under the previous administration.
While several officials were acquitted, others were handed sentences in absentia, further fueling the public’s call for transparency and accountability.
This ruling marks a rare but significant win for Mali’s justice system in a country grappling with governance challenges amid a prolonged political transition.
