President John Mahama has intervened in the recent clampdown on 62 FM stations, urging a more balanced approach that protects media freedom while ensuring regulatory compliance. His appeal followed a directive by the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend operations of non-compliant stations.

In a statement from the Presidency, Mahama stressed that while broadcasters must meet legal obligations, the process should not inadvertently suppress press freedom. He called for a more measured enforcement strategy that supports regularisation efforts.

Responding to the President’s call, the Ministry of Communications and the NCA have granted the affected stations a 30-day grace period to address outstanding authorisation and compliance issues.

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George made the announcement in parliament, confirming the reprieve and encouraging all stations to use the period to meet regulatory requirements.
