Libya has deported 700 Sudanese migrants back to their conflict-ridden homeland as part of a sweeping crackdown on illegal migration. The move was confirmed by the Directorate for Combating Illegal Migration in eastern Libya.
The migrants were reportedly detained in central and southeastern regions and transported by land to Sudan. Authorities claim some had infectious diseases, while others were removed for criminal or security reasons.
This operation is part of a broader campaign led by eastern forces under military commander Khalifa Hifter to curb trafficking and illegal crossings. Recently, the Libyan coast guard intercepted a boat carrying 80 migrants off Tobruk.
Libya remains a key transit point for migrants from Africa and the Middle East seeking to reach Europe, despite ongoing instability and humanitarian concerns.
