Liberia’s House Speaker, J. Fonati Koffa, will resign on May 12, ending a months-long crisis sparked by a factional takeover led by Rep. Richard Koon. Though the Supreme Court upheld Koffa’s position, enforcement stalled due to Executive inaction.

Koffa informed the Rule of Law Caucus of his decision, calling it a move to restore order and enable fresh leadership elections. The caucus, while saddened, acknowledged that his authority had been eroded beyond repair.

Critics have pointed to the Executive Branch’s silence as a major setback for governance and the rule of law during the impasse.

Koffa, elected Speaker in January 2024, will continue to serve as Grand Kru’s representative as the Legislature seeks to rebuild trust and credibility.
