In Liberia, citizens and civil society groups are voicing strong opposition to a proposed repeal of parts of the 2018 Local Government Act (LGA). The Act, seen as a cornerstone of local democracy, empowers county councils to participate in decision-making and development planning.

On Monday, a coalition of civic organizations, disabled persons’ groups, and concerned citizens submitted a petition to the government, urging it to halt the repeal process.

They argue that dismantling the Act’s provisions threatens gains made in decentralization, transparency, and inclusive governance.

The petition reflects growing concern that weakening local structures could derail democratic progress and widen the gap between communities and national leadership.
