The Liberian Senate has commenced confirmation hearings for Associate Justice Yarmie Quiqui Gbeisay, nominated to serve as the next Chief Justice of the Republic.
The proceedings began on Monday before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims, and Petitions. The confirmation is part of the legislature’s constitutional mandate to vet top judicial appointments.
Justice Gbeisay currently serves on the Supreme Court bench and was nominated by President Joseph Boakai following the retirement of Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh, who stepped down after reaching the constitutional retirement age of 70 on June 26, 2025.
The hearing is expected to weigh Gbeisay’s legal qualifications, judicial philosophy, and vision for the country’s justice system.
