Liberia has pledged to scale up domestic funding for its HIV response as the country confronts a concerning increase in infections. Marking World AIDS Day 2025, government officials and health advocates gathered in Monrovia to assess the growing challenge and reaffirm national commitment.

New figures show that the number of Liberians living with HIV has risen from 34,000 in 2024 to 36,000 in 2025, prompting urgent calls for sustained investment in prevention, treatment, and awareness programs. Stakeholders at the event stressed that the country cannot rely solely on donor support if it hopes to curb the upward trend.

Officials emphasized the importance of strengthening health systems, expanding testing and treatment access, and addressing stigma, which continues to hinder early diagnosis. They also highlighted the need for community-led efforts to ensure vulnerable populations receive adequate support.

Liberia says increasing domestic funding will be central to reversing the rise in cases and building a more resilient, long-term HIV response.
