Liberia is facing a worsening drug addiction crisis, with tragic consequences for communities. In the latest incident, two people have died and two others are in critical condition after consuming an unidentified substance in the Soul Clinic community of Montserrado County.
The deaths come less than a week after a coalition of civil society groups launched a nationwide anti-drug campaign on August 7, 2025. The initiative aims to raise awareness, strengthen rehabilitation support, and push for stronger enforcement against drug trafficking.
The Human Rights Commission has joined calls for a regional approach, stressing that the drug epidemic transcends borders. Advocates say coordinated action across West Africa is urgently needed to protect vulnerable young people and curb the escalating crisis.
