Liberia has launched its first semi-industrial fiberglass fishing vessel, The Sea King, marking a major step in modernizing the country’s fisheries sector. The initiative comes as part of broader government efforts to strengthen marine resource management and promote sustainable fishing.
Supported by the World Bank, the vessel’s introduction underscores the value of global partnerships in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on the protection and sustainable use of oceans. Officials say the new technology will help boost production while reducing environmental impact.
According to fisheries authorities, the 23-meter vessel has a 200-metric-ton capacity and represents a significant technological leap for the industry. They believe it will enhance operational efficiency, support economic growth, and position Liberia as a rising player in the regional fisheries space.
The launch also coincides with government plans to reduce fishing license fees, a move expected to encourage compliance and expand participation in the formal fisheries economy.
