In a historic diplomatic milestone, Liberia has been elected to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term — its first since 1961.
Running unopposed, Liberia secured an overwhelming 181 votes, well above the required 128, during Tuesday’s vote at the UN General Assembly.
The country will assume its seat in January 2026, alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, replacing Sierra Leone and Mozambique.
Monrovia’s return to the global council marks a renewed opportunity for Liberia to influence international peace and security over the next two years.
