Tensions are rising in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, as the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the protest group Solidarity and Trust For a New Day (STAND) remain at odds over a planned demonstration scheduled for December 17.
STAND says the protest is aimed at drawing attention to the rising cost of living, alleged corruption, and what it describes as poor governance. The group’s leadership insists the action will be peaceful and within constitutional limits.
However, the police have advised the organizers to reconsider the timing, citing public safety concerns during the festive season. LNP spokesperson Cecelia Clarke emphasized that while the right to peaceful assembly is respected, it must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the law.
Despite the caution from authorities, STAND leader Molubah Morlu has maintained that the protest will go ahead as planned, setting the stage for a tense standoff between demonstrators and security forces.
