At the close of the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, regional leaders reaffirmed their commitment to tackling insecurity and climate change. The conference, focused on peacebuilding, highlighted the urgent need for sustained cooperation in the region.

Former Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, emphasized the importance of staying true to the founding vision of revitalizing Lake Chad. He urged stakeholders to prioritize economic and cultural sustainability alongside security efforts.

International partners also reinforced their support for the region. Elizabeth McGarva, Co-chair of the International Support Group, called on all stakeholders to remain committed to achieving lasting peace in affected communities.

With increasing threats from insurgency and environmental degradation, the forum’s resolutions set a path for continued regional collaboration, ensuring that security and climate challenges remain top priorities.
