African-Americans in Senegal joined global commemorations of Juneteenth on June 19 with a strong call for mental emancipation and responsible leadership across Africa. The day marks 160 years since the last group of enslaved Africans in the U.S. gained freedom in Texas.
In Dakar, the African-American Association of Senegal led a symbolic celebration, urging African leaders to commit to prudent governance and effective use of the continent’s resources for African development.
The association emphasized the need for education and awareness to liberate African minds from lingering colonial influence and modern forms of neo-colonialism.
As reported by Christopher Atitso, the gathering also served as a space to strengthen bonds between the African-American diaspora and Africans on the continent in a shared moment of reflection and unity.
