A new report by Human Rights Watch has raised concerns over the plight of internally displaced people in Khar Yalla, on the outskirts of Saint-Louis, Senegal. The organization accuses authorities of abandoning residents affected by coastal flooding in the area.

According to the report, around 1,000 people displaced from centuries-old fishing communities on the Langue de Barbarie have lived in Khar Yalla for the past nine years. The region remains highly vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis.

Human Rights Watch says these communities lack access to essential services such as clean water, sanitation, and healthcare, living in conditions that violate basic human rights standards.

The report calls on Senegalese authorities to take urgent action to provide assistance, improve living conditions, and protect the rights of displaced families facing climate-related hardships.
