Dozens of civilians have been killed in northern Burkina Faso since May 2025 in a wave of attacks by jihadist groups, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has reported.
The rights group’s report, released on Monday, attributes the violence to al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Islamic State in the Sahel Province (IS Sahel).
HRW stressed that the attacks violate international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes, urging authorities and international partners to act decisively to protect civilians in the conflict-hit region.
