Guinea’s Ministry of Trade and Industry has closed more than 1,700 industrial units, mainly mineral water producers, for violating state regulations. The shutdown aims to protect consumers from potentially harmful products.

The affected factories failed to meet safety and compliance standards, prompting the government to withdraw their products from the market. Authorities say this move is part of broader efforts to tighten industrial oversight.

The Guinean Consumers’ Union, a vocal critic of unchecked mineral water production in Conakry, welcomed the closures. The Union highlighted longstanding health concerns tied to unregulated bottling practices.

Ousmane Keita, president of the Consumer Union, praised the action as long overdue and urged continued vigilance to ensure only safe, quality products reach the public.
