Guinea’s authorities are pressing ahead with a large-scale operation to clear major streets in the capital, Conakry, as part of efforts to decongest public spaces and improve urban order.
The initiative, launched a few days ago, targets street vendors who have set up along sidewalks and road corridors across the city, with officials saying the exercise is aimed at restoring free movement and public safety.
However, the operation has triggered frustration and resistance from traders, many of whom depend on street vending as their main source of livelihood.
Protests have already erupted in some parts of Conakry, reflecting growing tensions between city authorities and informal sector workers affected by the eviction exercise.
