Authorities in Guinea have charged 60 people with arson, theft, and murder following a deadly riot at the Weily Mining site in the gold-rich Siguiri region.
The unrest erupted on October 4 after locals demanded the release of 17 detainees linked to an earlier vandalism case. Protesters attacked the mine, setting fire to vehicles and buildings, leaving two people dead and several injured.
According to state prosecutor Ibrahima I. Camara, the charges include arson, destruction of property, and complicity in murder. Investigations are being jointly led by the police and gendarmerie.
The violence underscores rising tensions in Siguiri, where disputes between locals and mining companies have intensified amid tighter government regulation of the sector.
