Deposed Guinea-Bissau president Umaro Sissoco Embaló has arrived safely in Dakar following Wednesday’s military takeover in Bissau. His relocation comes after rapid regional interventions led by ECOWAS and supported by Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Senegal’s government confirmed that President Faye participated in an extraordinary virtual ECOWAS Summit convened to address the crisis. The heads of state strongly condemned the attempted forceful seizure of power and demanded the immediate restoration of constitutional order, along with the release of Embaló and all other detainees.

ECOWAS leaders also agreed to set up a restricted mediation committee—of which Senegal is a member—to help defuse tensions. The committee’s efforts contributed to securing Embaló’s safe passage to Senegal as the situation in Bissau remains fluid.

Authorities in Dakar say they are working with ECOWAS, the African Union, and other partners to support dialogue and ensure a swift return to stability and democratic governance in Guinea-Bissau.
