The Guinea-Bissau Human Rights League has issued a firm condemnation of the recent military coup, warning that the abrupt disruption of the nation’s electoral process poses a serious threat to democratic governance.

According to the organisation, the military’s intervention undermines the will of the people and jeopardises hard-won democratic gains. The League is urging the armed forces to step back immediately and allow the electoral process to resume without interference.

Human Rights League President Bubacar Turé stressed that Guinea-Bissau’s stability depends on respecting constitutional order and ensuring citizens can choose their leaders freely.

The organisation is calling on national and international partners to closely monitor the situation and support efforts to restore democratic legitimacy.
