In Guinea-Bissau, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has declared he will remain in office until a new head of state is elected, despite his mandate expiring on September 4, 2025.
His stance has triggered backlash from the opposition, which insists his continued stay undermines democratic principles. The Alliance for Peace coalition is demanding a democratic transition to safeguard peace and stability ahead of elections.
Opposition leaders argue that only a transfer of power can guarantee a fair process in the run-up to the November 23 presidential vote. Embaló, however, has already confirmed his candidacy for a second term.
