Several opposition members in Guinea-Bissau have been released after spending a month in military detention following the November 26 coup, authorities have confirmed.

Those freed include six opposition figures and close associates of leading opponent Domingo Simoes Pereira. Their release followed mediation efforts by Senegalese diplomats and calls from ECOWAS urging restraint.

Despite the development, Pereira remains in military custody, with his family expressing concern over his continued detention and reported health issues. Meanwhile, opposition presidential candidate Fernando Dias has sought refuge at the Nigerian embassy, where he has been granted political asylum.

The Guinea-Bissau League for Human Rights has welcomed the releases but is calling on military authorities to free all remaining political detainees and uphold fundamental human rights.
