Guinea-Bissau’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) has described Sunday’s presidential and parliamentary elections as peaceful, with vote counting now underway. Officials reported no major incidents of violence during the November 23 polls.

Deputy Executive Secretary Idriça Djaló said minor logistical challenges were swiftly addressed as more than 960,000 citizens were called to vote. He praised the calm conduct of candidates and highlighted the strong participation of women and young people as a sign of deepening democratic commitment.

More than 3,000 polling stations were opened across the country, though turnout figures from the nearly 800,000 eligible voters are yet to be released. Twelve candidates are vying for the presidency, including Fernando Dias and incumbent leader Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who is seeking re-election.

Election observers have commended the process as generally transparent, despite isolated issues such as missing names on voter rolls. For many Bissau-Guineans, the vote represents an opportunity to push for meaningful national progress.
