Civil society groups in Guinea-Bissau are urging ECOWAS to take stronger action to ensure the country’s electoral process reaches its conclusion despite military interference. Their appeal follows Tuesday’s announcement by the electoral commission that it cannot declare results because the military has seized tally sheets and essential equipment.
With the country in a deepening post-electoral crisis, civic organizations are proposing pathways to restore transparency, including safeguarding materials and guaranteeing the commission’s independence. They are now calling on ECOWAS to apply firm pressure on the junta so that results can be announced and the democratic process upheld.
The groups warn that without regional intervention, Guinea-Bissau risks sliding further into instability, as citizens wait anxiously for clarity on their political future.
