Guinea-Bissau’s election season has reached a climax as more than 800,000 eligible voters prepare to cast their ballots on Sunday to choose a president and members of parliament. The capital, Bissau, was awash with energy on Friday as political parties held their final rallies before the campaign window officially closed.
The two leading contenders—incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and his main challenger Fernando Diaz—drew massive crowds as they made their last appeals for support. Supporters filled major streets, chanting slogans and showcasing the intense political enthusiasm surrounding the vote.
In total, 12 presidential candidates are vying for the nation’s top office, making this one of the most competitive elections in recent years. With tensions low but expectations high, voters will now decide the country’s political direction.
