Some aspects of surrogacy may seem unfamiliar, but according to medical research, surrogacy is an arrangement in which a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth on behalf of another person or couple, who will become the child’s legal parents after the birth.

People choose surrogacy for various reasons, including infertility, health risks or complications associated with pregnancy, or situations where pregnancy is medically impossible.

To provide more insights into this practice, we have Simbiat Bakare, a fact-checker from Nigeria.

In her recent research, Simbiat found that surrogacy is primarily practiced in Nigeria. However, she tells WADR that a more concerning aspect of this practice is the medical implications for those involved.
