The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has reversed its stance and now supports the newly proposed GH₵1 fuel levy, following clarifications from government officials about its purpose. Initially opposed to the levy due to concerns about cost burdens on drivers, the union has now endorsed the plan after securing key assurances.
Government representatives explained that the levy—part of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025—is expected to generate GH₵5.7 billion annually, strictly earmarked for repaying energy sector debts and stabilizing power supply. The GPRTU also received confirmation that transport fares would remain unchanged despite the levy.
Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of the union, described the agreement as necessary for national interest and economic stability.
