The removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has taken a fresh turn, with NDC lawyer Abraham Amaliba claiming she initially sought to retire with full benefits before her dismissal. Amaliba said her hopes of a negotiated exit collapsed after she decided to challenge her removal in court.
President John Dramani Mahama removed Torkornoo on September 1, 2025, based on the recommendation of a five-member committee established under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. The inquiry followed a petition by businessman Daniel Ofori.
Legal analyst Martin Luther Kpebu explained that because Torkornoo was removed for “stated misbehaviour,” she automatically forfeits her retirement entitlements.
The investigative committee was chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang and included former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo, and Associate Professor James Sefah Dzisah.
