Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) has directed 62 FM stations across the country to suspend operations with immediate effect, citing serious and persistent breaches of broadcasting regulations. The move follows an extensive audit and a ministerial directive to enforce compliance within the sector.

In a statement issued Thursday, June 12, the NCA revealed that the infractions relate to non-compliance with the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), and conditions tied to their broadcasting authorisations. Thirteen stations had failed to complete payments for provisional authorisations, while seven others had not fulfilled requirements for final approval.

The crackdown marks the first phase of an enforcement drive based on findings from the latest Frequency Audit Report. Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, told parliament that the violations range from unpaid fees to missing compliance certifications.

While recognising the role of radio in national development, the NCA reaffirmed its commitment to regulatory order. It warned that continued non-compliance could lead to further sanctions and urged all broadcasters to regularise their operations promptly.
