Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama is set to present a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly in March, seeking global recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
The proposal, already adopted by the African Union, forms part of broader continental efforts to advance the reparations agenda. It aims to secure formal international acknowledgment and lay the groundwork for meaningful redress.
President Mahama made the announcement during his report to the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government, where he spoke in his capacity as the AU Champion for Advancing the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations.
The initiative builds on ongoing African efforts to establish continental mechanisms and legal frameworks to support reparatory justice, while pushing for wider global recognition of historical injustices linked to slavery, colonialism, and apartheid.
