Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has officially submitted her response to President John Dramani Mahama after three separate petitions were filed calling for her removal from office. This submission was made within the 10-day period required by a recent presidential directive.

In addition to sending her response to the president, Torkornoo forwarded copies to the Council of State, adhering to constitutional protocols. While the specific allegations behind the petitions have not been revealed, they are believed to involve concerns regarding her administrative conduct and decisions.

This development is significant, as it is the first time in recent history that a sitting Chief Justice has faced such formal petitions for removal under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. The outcome may have far-reaching effects on judicial independence and public trust in the country’s legal system.
