Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has secured the New Patriotic Party’s presidential nomination for Ghana’s 2028 general elections. He surpassed the required fifty-percent threshold, amassing over 110,000 votes in a nationwide primary process that concluded with certified results at the party’s headquarters.
Electoral Commission officials supervised the transparent vote collation across all constituencies, formally confirming Bawumia’s decisive victory. The outcome positions the economist and former central banker as the standard-bearer for Ghana’s main opposition party after its 2024 electoral defeat.
In his acceptance remarks, Bawumia pledged to unify the NPP ranks and refocus the party’s energy on recapturing state power. His campaign emphasized economic stewardship and rebuilding internal cohesion to present a formidable challenge in the next presidential race.
The primary victory sets the stage for a highly anticipated 2028 contest as Ghana’s two dominant parties prepare for another pivotal democratic showdown. Bawumia now faces the task of consolidating support while articulating a compelling vision to regain the presidency.
