A 31-year-old Ghanaian man has been arrested in Accra after U.S. authorities linked him to an eight-million-dollar romance scam targeting elderly Americans. The suspect, identified as Frederick Kumi and known by several aliases, was apprehended on December 11 during a joint security operation between Ghana and the United States.

Investigators say the arrest exposes a sophisticated, AI-powered fraud ring that used fabricated online identities to deceive victims into sending large sums of money. According to U.S. officials, the network operated across multiple countries and relied on advanced digital manipulation tools to make scams more convincing.

Ghanaian authorities confirmed that Kumi’s arrest followed months of collaboration between cybersecurity and intelligence units in both countries. They say additional suspects may be pursued as investigations continue into the financial flows behind the scheme.

The case highlights the growing threat of tech-enabled fraud and the need for stronger cross-border cooperation. Officials in both countries have reiterated their commitment to dismantling criminal networks exploiting vulnerable individuals online.
