Tensions flared in Ghana’s Ashanti Region as youth in Manso Tontokrom blocked military personnel from entering a disputed mining site. Dozens of soldiers who arrived on the scene were prevented from accessing the community after protesters barricaded roads with burning tires.
The youth insist they are engaged in community mining, not illegal activities, and accuse Asanko Mines of using the military to intimidate them. Richmond Osei, a local youth leader, said the land has been mined by the community for decades.
During the standoff, the protesters invoked traditional rituals, using schnapps, eggs, and fowls to curse those behind the alleged military invasion. The soldiers later withdrew without violence, and calm has since returned to the town.
