Ghana’s President John Mahama has appealed to citizens who fled the recent conflict in Gbinyiri in the Savannah Region to return home, assuring them that calm has been restored. The call was relayed by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa during a visit to Yvankoro in Côte d’Ivoire, where thousands of displaced Ghanaians are sheltering.
According to the Minister, security conditions have improved, with more than 8,000 people already back in their communities. He urged the over 5,000 still in Côte d’Ivoire to follow suit.
The clashes between the Gonja and Birifor communities left at least 31 dead and displaced nearly 50,000 people. Over 13,000 fled to Côte d’Ivoire and about 1,000 into Burkina Faso. Aid agencies warn conditions remain dire, with urgent needs for shelter, food, and medical care.
Minister Ablakwa announced that 6 million CFA francs had been donated to Ivorian authorities to support the displaced and reaffirmed the Mahama administration’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians everywhere.
