The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) has called on Ghana to urgently pass the long-delayed Community Sentencing Bill. The Commission described the bill as a crucial measure to tackle chronic overcrowding in the country’s prisons.
During a recent promotion mission to Ghana, the ACHPR identified systemic shortcomings in the justice and detention systems. These include severe prison congestion and gaps in upholding human rights standards.
Despite ongoing reform efforts, the Commission stressed that without swift passage of the bill, the dignity and rights of detainees will continue to be undermined.
