Ghana is set to take a bold step in strengthening local governance, as President John Mahama has announced that elections for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will begin in 2026. This marks a major shift from the current appointment system to a more democratic process rooted in popular vote.

Speaking at the 2025 orientation for newly appointed MMDCEs in Accra, President Mahama revealed that a National Review Committee is finalizing consultations on constitutional reforms to enable this transition. He emphasized that the move aims to deepen decentralization, enhance accountability, and boost community participation in local development.

According to Mahama, public opinion strongly supports the reform, with recent surveys reflecting a growing desire among citizens to choose their local leaders directly. If implemented, the reform would mark a new chapter in Ghana’s democratic evolution and governance structure.
