Ghana’s parliamentary minority has slammed the government’s decision to temporarily shut down its embassy in Washington, D.C., following a major visa fraud scandal.
The move, announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on May 26, comes after a special audit uncovered unauthorized payments and systemic corruption within the embassy’s IT department.
Critics argue the closure is a hasty response that disrupts consular services and tarnishes Ghana’s image abroad, calling instead for targeted accountability.
However, the government insists the shutdown is necessary for thorough investigations and a full restructuring of the embassy.
