Ghana says it plans to propose a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime in the history of humankind and calling for reparations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the proposal could be presented as early as this month.
Authorities say the initiative forms part of Africa’s growing push for accountability over historical injustices.
However, the move may face resistance from some European leaders who argue that present-day governments should not be held responsible for historical crimes.
